  • APRIL SHOWERS

This time of year, you’ll often hear the phrase ‘April showers bring May flowers‘ but have you ever wondered where it came from and how it became a common expression here in the United States?

The saying actually originated in the United Kingdom where April is one of the more soggy months based on its position in the jet stream.  But the proverb, ‘March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers‘, dates back to 1886. That said there is an even earlier variation of this in a poem from 1610 that stated ‘Sweet April showers / Do spring May flowers‘.

According to Wikipedia, “April Showers” is also a 1921 song composed by Louis Silvers with lyrics by B. G. DeSylva, The lyrics are

Life is not a highway strewn with flowers,
Still it holds a goodly share of bliss,
When the sun gives way to April showers,
Here is the point you should never miss.

Chorus: And where you see clouds upon the hills, So keep on looking for a bluebird, And list’ning for his song, Whenever April showers come along.

Though April showers may come your way,
They bring the flowers that bloom in May,
So if it’s raining have no regrets,
Because it isn’t raining rain you know, it’s raining violets.

Chorus: And where you see clouds upon the hills, So keep on looking for a bluebird, And list’ning for his song, Whenever April showers come along.

April is typically the time when the last bit of snowy precipitation gives way to all rain storms as the temperatures start to climb. Many think that the increased rain shower activity sparks flowers and other plants to really start to emerge from their winter slumber and prepare to bloom.

You might also logically conclude that this familiar saying suggests that April is the rainiest month of the year, but in New York, April isn’t typically the month with the highest annual rain. Every month between May and November usually has higher average precipitation amounts than April.

The idea of ‘April showers’ is ingrained in our nation’s cultural consciousness as a symbol of spring and nature’s renewal.  These phrases date back to time when knowing planting dates for crops was essential to farmers and gardeners, but science-based weather forecasts were not available.

But the saying persists even today, perhaps as a reminder that a period of discomfort or hardship can provide the basis for a period of happiness and joy once spring emerges in full force.

So if you find yourself in the middle of some rainy, dreary days, take comfort in the fact that sunnier days are ahead!

    Spring Equinox

It’s that time of year again! We’re all tired of winter’s cold weather, along with the snow, ice, wind, and grey skies.  We are hungry for warmer weather.  We can see the lengthening of daylight but are still looking for ‘green’. When the calendar flips to March, we can finally see signs of hope as the spring……
